CNN’s Fredricka Whitfield joked Sunday that high inflation means Americans are having to reduce their Thanksgiving portion sizes.
“It seems we’re all eating smaller portions, if at all,” Whitfield said in response to reports of higher Thanksgiving meal prices.
Before her joke, CNN Business consumer reporter Nathaniel Meyersohn explained how inflation will affect consumers this holiday season.

“All signs are pointing to a more expensive Thanksgiving dinner this year,” Meyersohn said. “An estimate this week predicted that Thanksgiving fare prices will rise 13.5% from a year ago. Some of our favorite side dishes will be more expensive, with potatoes, fruit and vegetables up 10%. Baking ingredients are up double digits. And then when it comes to the desert, the pies will go up 20%.”
“So this Thanksgiving, there’s no escaping inflation,” he added.

Inflation is a top issue for voters ahead of Tuesday’s 2022 midterm elections. Republicans have overwhelmingly focused their campaigns on inflation and crime. While Sen. The Biden administration and the US Federal Reserve have been criticized for their opposition to inflation. Both Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell incorrectly called inflation last year “temporary.”
