Cole Sprouse Opens Up About His ‘Complicated Relationship’ With Celebrity Culture: ‘Fame Is A Trauma’

Cole Sprouse reflects on growing up as a child actor — and the “trauma” that came with it.

Sprouse recently revealed in an interview with The New York Times that he has a “complicated relationship” with celebrity culture while promoting his upcoming movie Moonshot. Sprouse began playing alongside his brother Dylan Sprouse when he was a toddler.

Sprouse played the role of Ross Geller’s son on Friends before he and Dylan rose to fame for their roles in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. The two took a break from acting after their Disney Channel careers, and Sprouse returned with a role in Riverdale.

“I started acting when I was so young that as an adult I didn’t really try to think about whether I was actually enjoying the performance,” Sprouse told the New York Times. “When I came back, I remembered that I love acting very much. But I still have a very complicated relationship with celebrity culture.”

Sprouse has stayed out of the spotlight this time and kept his relationships private.

The actor went on to explain why his childhood acting career was different than the young women in the industry.

“My brother and I used to get, ‘Oh, you got over it! Oh, you’re safe!’ No. The young women on the canal we were on [Disney Channel] have been sexualized to such an extent as my brother and I from such an early age that we absolutely cannot compare our experiences. And every single person that goes through that trauma has a unique experience.”
