College basketball rankings: Baylor holds firm in top 25 and 1 as star freshman shines in win over Auburn – CBS Sports

This season’s freshman class in college basketball is not well-known or celebrated nationally compared to other star-studded classes before it. That’s partly because Ron Holland, the top prospect in the class of 2023, bypassed college entirely, and partly because the class’s two most famous players, USC’s Bronny James and Kentucky’s DJ Wagner, are largely because of that are famous because their fathers are also famous basketball players.

However, if you listened to a recent episode of the Eye On college basketball podcast, you may remember me explaining how basically every season a talented but mostly unknown freshman emerges – unknown at least to everyone who is Not for die-hard fans, gets eliminated early and establishes himself as an All-American candidate for a quality team. Two years ago it was Jabari Smith from Auburn. Last season it was Alabama’s Brandon Miller. On Tuesday night at the Sanford Pentagon in South Dakota, Baylor’s Ja’Kobe Walter put on a performance that suggested he could be that guy this season, posting 28 points and six rebounds in an 88-82 win over Bruce Pearl’s Auburn Tigers scored.

“I leaned on my teammates,” Walter said afterward, according to the Baylor Lariat. “They just encouraged me – and the coaching staff too [also] just encouraged me to keep going.

Walter’s 28 points were the most for a debut player in school history and the fourth-most for a debut player in Big 12 history. In short, the 6-foot-2 Texas native seemed like a real candidate to move up to No. 1 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft next June.

With the six-point win, Baylor remains No. 18 in the CBS Sports Top 25 And 1 daily college basketball rankings, updated Wednesday morning. The Bears’ next game is Thursday against John Brown. Their next contest against a power conference school is Nov. 22 against Oregon State in Brooklyn.
