College basketball rankings, grades: Kentucky gets ‘A+’, North Carolina gets ‘F’ on weekly report card

Gather, boys and girls. It’s Sunday, which means it’s time to review the week in college basketball by handing out our weekly report card. We’ll rank some of the best and worst team performances from the last seven days across the sport.

I’m an optimist at heart, so let’s start with the good. Kentucky bounced back from an “F” grade last week to earn a rare “A+” from me this week, not only after two games, but with back-to-back wins over Mississippi State and No. 10 Tennessee to revive its NCAA tournament hopes. Britain’s resume is lacking, but this week’s two wins and regular-season win over the Vols at least bolster its bubble prospects. Maybe, just maybe, the tournament will include the Big Blue Nation after all.

Speaking of blue blood with blue color schemes, No. 5 Kansas also got good marks from you this week, with one out of six “A”s or better on the report card. KU wrapped up the road against incendiary Oklahoma state earlier in the week before showing its strength on Saturday by digging a 17-point deficit against No. 9 Baylor at home and winning by 16. The Jayhawks extended their winning streak to four games and maintained co-leader status in the Big 12 race with Texas.

There was also a lot of bad throughout the sport, so this week’s grades reflect both the good and the bad. The bad was less prominent but no less noticeable, with Clemson, North Carolina and Ohio State bottoming out this week’s grades for all the wrong reasons.

Let’s dive into this week’s testimony. As always, remember that the cycle runs from Monday to Sunday.
