Colombia called for strengthening regional integration at the Celac meeting

Bogotá, Dec. 1 (Prensa Latina) Colombia, during its participation in the meeting of National Coordinators of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), asked to promote measures that lead to greater regional integration and cooperation, an official source said announced here today.

The meeting, convened by Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in its capacity as president pro tempore, was held the day before in that island nation’s capital to begin negotiations on the Kingstown Declaration, which is expected to be approved at the leaders’ summit State and/or Government will take place on March 1 and 2, 2024.

Ambassador Javier Higuera, director of the regional consultation and integration mechanisms, attended on behalf of the Colombian country, said a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The information noted that the representative of Bogotá insisted on the relevance of resuming meetings of energy ministers, strengthening working groups on energy transition and biotechnology, and promoting events between civil protection authorities.

He also stressed that the health strategy for Latin America and the Caribbean must focus on the establishment of the regional medicines agency to strengthen the capacity to respond to health crises.

The other representatives attending the meeting were also asked to examine the possibility of creating a framework for the homologation of qualifications.

According to the statement, this measure would facilitate labor mobility and promote educational and cultural exchange programs, which in turn would promote closer cooperation between nations.

On the other hand, “the current efforts to strengthen the dialogue with the African Union were highlighted” and “the strengthening of the strategic alliance between the Celac countries and the European Union was highlighted”.

Composed of 33 countries, Celac was founded in Venezuela in 2011 on the principles of dialogue and political agreement and as an articulation mechanism to work at all times on the basis of consensus and defense of peace.
