Colombia will create an agency for climate action

The new entity will seek to determine how much carbon is sequestered by strategic Colombian ecosystems, and manage serious and responsible carbon sequestration, among other goals.

According to the announcement of the Head of the Environment Department, made during the meeting of the CFLI (Climate Finance Leadership Initiative), the agency would have the scientific knowledge of the research institutes to evaluate these conditions of the territory, from the Páramos to the sea, through the Ciénagas and the Amazon.

In addition, it would have the responsibility of registering public and private projects and having the national forest advisory service with real-time information, the minister said. In this way, knowing how many hectares are seriously absorbing carbon and, if desired, creating a public certification with international audits, he added.

“But let carbon credits be serious and responsible,” stressed Muhamad.

On the other hand, he highlighted the work that the ministry has been doing with the forest development cores, in particular with the inauguration of production sites such as Sacha Inchi in San José del Guaviare.
