Colt McCoy announces tough but necessary move for Cardinals – Arizona Sports

TEMPE – If you know, you know.

When it came to quarterback Colt McCoy and his place on the roster, the Arizona Cardinals knew a change was needed and fired the veteran signal caller Monday.

After watching him attempt 12 passes in four preseason series and many more around camp, the Cardinals had seen everything they needed to see in the QB.

The cut comes in the run-up to McCoy’s third season as a Cardinal and what looked like a kick-off for Week 1 after working with the first-team offense throughout training camp and pre-season.

But ultimately, in the eyes of general manager Monti Ossenfort and head coach Jonathan Gannon, it was a necessary step as they continue to work on their vision for the future of the franchise.

“As with any decision, we look at all of the work, evaluate our guys – that’s where production plays a role – and feel like it was the best decision for the team to go with the guys that we have in the room to help us keep going.” “Winning football games,” Gannon said Monday.

Best decision or not, it wasn’t an easy decision considering what the veteran has done this season off and under the previous helm.

“It’s tough,” Gannon added. “Colt is great. He’s a real pro, that’s why he’s been playing for so long. Having gone through this process many times in a different place, today was a little different. It is difficult.

“They know they care, they put a lot of sacrifice and hard work into their craft. But at the end of the day, I think if you’re honest with them, they appreciate that and they know we’re going to do what we have to do to do what’s best for the team. These are tough days.”

With McCoy, who many dubbed Arizona’s opening starter ahead of Monday’s news, out of the picture, the Cardinals are likely to turn to either new signing Josh Dobbs or newcomer Clayton Tune under center.
