Tension in the sky over the Norwegian Sea, the scene of the NATO exercises of the last few days. Britain’s Royal Air Force sent fighter jets after a Russian maritime patrol plane was spotted near Britain’s aircraft carrier task force. In response to the sighting of the Russian fighter, the F-35s were fired. This was reported by the Carrier Strike Group in the United Kingdom. Norwegian Air Force F-35As joined the RAF to escort Moscow’s patrol aircraft.
Scramble during NATO exercises
With tensions rising over the conflict in Ukraine, the RAF and Britain’s NATO partners are on high alert for Russian Air Force incursions. The British Carrier Strike Group, led by HMS Queen Elizabeth, has been carrying out simulated missions in the North Sea in recent days. The British flagship sails alongside a number of other Royal Navy ships, including the Type 45 destroyer HMS Diamond and the Royal Fleet’s auxiliary tanker RFA Tideforce.
The exercises
A number of warships from British allies also took part in the exercises on HMS Elizabeth, including ships from Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium. HMS Queen Elizabeth has the capability to deploy F-35 Lightning fighter jets and Merlin helicopters. A post on the HMS Queen Elizabeth X Twitter account praised RAF 617 Squadron for “professionally monitoring the situation”.
