This month’s San Diego Comic-Con is going to be rather low-key, at least as far as reveals from the Hollywood studios go. Only a handful of big film and television figures will spend money to recruit talent for the convention, with film and television highlights including Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Starz’s John Wick prequel The Continental.

The decision for players like Marvel and Warner Bros. to step down comes as the writers’ strike rages on, the financial crisis deepens across Hollywood, and the specter of an actors’ strike looms.

Notably, this is the first time since 2011 that neither Marvel Studios nor DC’s film department will host a panel in Hall H. Marvel has long said it wouldn’t be coming unless it could actually deliver new material (it laid out extensive plans last year and shelved several films due to the writers’ strike), while DC is in a rebuilding phase as the new Studio bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran are planning a new plan, with rollouts set to begin in 2025.

Although large panels in Hall H make most of the headlines, only a small percentage of attendees actually attend the congress to do so. Hall H seats 6,500 people, while an estimated 160,000 visitors come each year.

In a way, Comic-Con could be returning to its roots this year. Comic-Con started in 1970 as a niche event for comic book fans and collectors and over the past decade has grown into a mainstream event featuring A-list stars and reveals of the world’s biggest films.

Thursday’s panels include Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Project K, What We Do in the Shadows, Archer and Anthony Mackie with Twisted Metal.

Friday movies also include Invincible, the John Wick prequel The Continental, Rick & Morty, Solar Opposites and an appearance from Jamie Lee Curtis, who will be promoting her graphic novel Mother Nature. to be turned into a horror film.

On Saturday, fans can look forward to a performance by Legendary Entertainment in Hall H (details to be announced) as well as a panel celebrating the 25th anniversary of That ’70s Show, a look at Hulu’s Futurama reboot, a chat with the cast of Abbott Elementary and a discussion of William cheers Shatner’s career, moderated by the icon himself.

Read on for highlights from the world of film and television at the convention.
