The Covid-19 pandemic has caused a setback in these areas in many regions, while the female population is now among the most affected by the health crisis in the world, according to the multilateral organization.
While women and girls face the greatest threats and deepest harm from current problematic situations like Covid-19, they are also taking action to address climate and environmental crises, said UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
In his speech to the commission, the minister referred to the many challenges they are currently facing while still largely excluded from the spaces where decisions are made, he said.
“We are still living with the results of millennia of patriarchy, which excludes women and prevents their voices from being heard,” Guterres said.
But it is not possible to move forward in achieving global goals such as the Sustainable Development Goals or the recovery from the pandemic without the contribution of all people, including women and girls, stressed the Portuguese diplomat.
UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous warned that more than two million mothers have left the labor market in 2020, coinciding with the Covid-19 pandemic.
This situation affects their access to social protection, equal pay and income security, as well as opportunities to hold managerial and managerial positions, the High Representative noted.
Furthermore, Bahous said, this is an accumulated loss that no society can afford.
This year, the Commission on the Status of Women focused on achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls in the context of climate change, environment and disaster risk reduction policies and programs. (ALH)
