Consumer spending in app stores surged to a new record high of $33 billion in the first quarter, with fervor for in-app subscriptions fueling growth. The mobile app economy has been on an upward trend since its inception in 2007. And it will continue to grow, according to data.ai’s latest quarterly global market report.
The data also shows that the first quarter of 2022 will be the biggest first quarter ever for consumer spending.
Overall, consumer spending on apps is expected to grow by more than 40% in two years, with overall iOS spending growing nearly 42% as of Q1 2020 and Google Play growing 44%.
As in previous quarters, Google Play was the primary driver of quarterly record downloads in the app market. Android users installed 28.5 billion out of 37 billion apps in the reporting period. This corresponds to an increase of 16% compared to the previous year.
iOS accounts for 73% of consumer spending on non-gaming apps
If Google Play dominates the download ranking, the opposite is true for consumer spending. New research from data.ai shows that iOS still accounts for 65% of the $33 billion spent on app stores worldwide. This figure corresponds to that of the previous five quarters.
Snapchat and Shoppee – the big winners in download ranking
The world’s largest apps in terms of downloads, spend, and monthly active users tend to remain relatively stable from quarter to quarter.
The giants dominate: TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube
Shoppee, meanwhile, jumped from No. 10 in downloads to No. 7. The Singapore-based mobile commerce company reported 2021 GAAP revenue of $5.1 billion and ended the year with operations in 13 countries across Asia, South America and Europe.
The influence of influencers: tools for creating content among the Q1 highlights
The most downloaded product in the first quarter was Speedfiy, a tool that allows users to speed up their Internet connection. Second is FastCandy, which offers them a fast and secure connection.
