At least 164 people have reported signs of poisoning after consuming a type of spinach called ‘Baby’ in Australia. Symptoms include hallucinations and blurred vision. NSW Health (New South Wales State Department of Health) also reported in a statement released yesterday (18) that out of that total, more than 40 people sought medical attention.
According to NSW Health, reported symptoms can be severe and include:
- delirium, confusion, or hallucinations;
- dilated pupils;
- rapid heartbeat;
- flushed face;
- blurred vision;
- dry mouth and skin;
- Fever.
FSANZ (Food Standards Australia New Zealand), responsible for developing food standards for Australia and New Zealand, announced the recall of batches of 16 products containing baby spinach, from salads to packaging containing the vegetable itself.
The brands affected are Riviera Fresh, Fresh Salad Co, Woolworths and Coles Supermarkets, and the list could grow as new cases are reported, the agency said.

“People who have purchased these recalled products must either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund,” NSW Health said, adding that “anyone who develops unusual and serious symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.” should.” .
