A home cook has shared how to make delicious Korean fried chicken at home — but her recipe has a big twist.

Sydney-based foodie Ayeh Manfre, better known as Cooking With Ayeh, created the popular street food using oyster mushrooms as an alternative to chicken.

To prepare the dish, Ayeh first put flour, paprika powder, turmeric, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper in a bowl.

She then mixed the spices and flour together before taking some of the dry mixture into a separate bowl and adding water.

She mixed water and flour together, then dipped oyster mushrooms into the wet batter and into the dry batter.

“I used oyster mushrooms, which have such a similar texture and look totally like chicken,” Ayeh wrote.

She repeated the wet-to-dry batter process one more time to double-coat the mushrooms, then deep-fried them in hot oil until golden.

Once the “fried chicken” was golden, Ayeh placed it in a bowl and tossed it generously in Heinz’s new Korean street food sauce.

Her recipe video garnered instant attention and more than 42,000 foodie views in just 22 hours.

Ingredients:

  • Oyster mushrooms
  • Plain Flour
  • paprika
  • turmeric
  • garlic powder
  • onion powder
  • cayenne pepper
  • water
  • oil
  • Heinz Korean style street food sauce

Method:

  • Place the flour, paprika powder, turmeric, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper in a bowl.
  • Combine the spices and flour together, then take out some of the dry mixture and place in a separate bowl, then add water.
  • Mix the water and flour, then dip the oyster mushrooms into the wet batter and into the dry batter.
  • Repeat the wet-to-dry batter process one more time to double coat the mushrooms, then fry in hot oil until golden brown.
  • Place the crispy fried chicken pieces in a bowl and toss generously in Heinz’s Korean Style Street Food Sauce to enjoy.
