You don’t need an expensive air conditioner or a fan to cool your home in summer: a simple plastic bottle is enough.
In summer, the thermometer often rises to over 30 degrees. For many, it is also unbearably hot in the apartment, especially in the attic. If you don’t have air conditioning you will really sweat. But don’t worry: a simple trick with a plastic bottle can also cool overheated apartments and bring the room temperature down to a tolerable level.

All you need for the bottle trick is a 1.5 liter PET bottle and water. And this is how it works:
- Fill an old 1.5 liter plastic bottle with tap water and place it in the freezer overnight.
- Take the bottle out of the freezer the next day.
- Now place the frozen plastic bottle at the highest point in the room, such as on a shelf or cupboard. Don’t forget the coasters, because condensation will form and run down the bottle.
- The bottle now visibly cools the room. A room measuring 20 square meters is said to be cooler for about three hours. In larger rooms, two or three bottles may be needed.

What else helps against the summer heat in the apartment
Other tips also help to banish the summer heat from the apartment. Proper ventilation is often the key here: rather than switching to a draft in the scorching midday heat, it’s best to open the windows in the cool morning and evening hours. Then close the outer blinds during the day – this prevents the hot rays of the sun from entering the apartment. The aluminum foil trick, with which the apartment should be pleasantly cool in the summer, works on a similar principle. And last but not least, wet towels should help cool down the room.
