With COP 28 ending in three days, OPEC's secretary general urged its members not to accept agreements that violate fossil fuels. A position that shocked many participating countries.
A major cold snap at COP 28. A letter at the center of all conversations. It was written by the Secretary General of OPEC, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. It urges its members to proactively reject any agreement that targets fossil fuels.
On the podium, the representative of the United Arab Emirates also defended oil, gas and coal: “We must continue to use all energies. Otherwise the world will not be able to meet the demand.” This position provokes the anger of around a hundred countries, including those in the European Union. For them, this COP 28 must be the signal for the beginning of the end of fossil fuels.
The Sultan also relies on renewable energy
But the economies of oil-exporting countries depend primarily on this fossil fuel. Hence the letter that sets this COP 28 in motion. The OPEC countries are still trying to diversify their economies. In the United Arab Emirates, for example, Sultan al-Jaber is the head of the country's first oil company, but also the head of the largest renewable energy company. Photovoltaic panels are intended to green the image of the emirate.
