The Dubai Climate Summit (COP28) this Wednesday (December 13, 2023) adopted an agreement to initiate a transition away from fossil fuels, after almost 200 countries spent two weeks of intensive negotiations on how they can tackle the climate crisis together.

The countries represented at COP28 today adopted the “Global Balance”, the agreement with which they want to strengthen their climate action to contain the rise in temperatures and ensure that they do not exceed one and a half degrees compared to pre-industrial levels.

This agreement, adopted by consensus in plenary, calls on states to “start transitioning away from fossil fuels in an orderly and equitable manner and accelerate action in this critical decade to reach the goal of zero emissions by 2050 .” according to science.

Opening a path to abandoning these types of energy was the priority of this summit for the European Union and other developed countries, as well as for countries very vulnerable to climate change, such as many developing countries.

But leading up to the COP28 plenary session, there was uncertainty over whether a deal that marked the end of the fossil fuel era would be accepted by oil-producing countries such as Saudi Arabia, which they described as a main opponent.

“It is a historic and unprecedented achievement,” said the President of COP28, Emirati Sultan Al Yaber, in the plenary session, who thanked the “hard work” of the delegations over the last two weeks and especially in the last hours negotiated until dawn to reach a consensus.
