At first there were only signs, now the RKI is right: the peak of the Corona wave has been passed. However, experts still speak of a high infection pressure. Health Minister Lauterbach and RKI head Wieler provide information on the situation of the crown in Germany.

In view of the crown’s high numbers, Health Minister Karl Lauterbach ruled out further easing. He sees the failure of mandatory vaccination as a clear defeat. Lauterbach spoke of a “bad week for the protection of the population”.
Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) criticizes the FDP for its majority rejection of mandatory vaccination against the crown in the Bundestag’s decisive vote. “The parties that decided to make this a party-political issue were essentially two,” Lauterbach said Friday in Berlin, without naming the parties specifically.
“I don’t expect anything from one party and I expected the support and solidarity of yesterday’s state from the other,” added Lauterbach. He was obviously referring to the CDU/CSU and the FDP. Both parliamentary groups voted almost unanimously in the Bundestag on Thursday against the mandatory vaccines from age 60 bill, supported by Lauterbach and many other members of the SPD and the Greens.
Lauterbach ruled out further easing of crown measurements. “We don’t have any leeway for more easing,” he said. It is important to maintain mandatory isolation for people infected by corona. Lauterbach had recently announced that it would be abolished and resumed it a little later.

He expects the measures will have to be tightened up again in the fall, Lauterbach said. “In the fall, we probably won’t ride the expected wave for the third time in the best possible way.” It is not yet possible to say which variant will dominate then. However, there are already signs that the Omicron variant is changing.
“Prerequisites for new ideal variants”
“The conditions for the emergence of new variants are currently ideal for the virus,” said the SPD politician, referring to the high number of cases. You probably couldn’t “enter the fall without the mask requirement”. In addition to the autumn wave, a summer wave can also be expected.
In light of the Bundestag’s rejected vaccination demand, Lauterbach spoke of a “clear and also bitter defeat” for all fans and “bad news” for all vulnerable groups. “It was a bad week to protect the population from infection,” he said. However, assigning blame for the lack of votes in the Bundestag is not convenient.
He does not expect another vaccination attempt: “I am pessimistic. I don’t think we’ll have any fruitful conversations in the next few weeks.” He doesn’t think it makes sense to introduce individual components of the original proposal – such as the obligation to provide advice – into the legislative process.

The SPD politician campaigned for a fourth dose of vaccination for people over 70 and people at risk. “The fourth dose is used very little.” Vaccination centers are currently “well trained” to immunize people. In addition, a creative new approach to a vaccination campaign is needed. Lauterbach called for “really creative advertising that explains it well and gives good reasons”.
Robert Koch Institute (RKI) president Lothar Wieler also spoke out in favor of a fourth dose of vaccination on Friday. He called for people infected but not previously vaccinated to be vaccinated. Only then can “the best protection” be achieved. Additionally, you must wear masks indoors “at your own risk,” according to Wieler.
