Corona: More than 2,000 patients in hospitals, 14,233 new infections

Austria is still being hit by a new wave of corona: on Wednesday, AGES reported 14,233 new infections and the number of patients in hospitals rose from 131 to 2,116. The seven-day incidence rose above 1,000 and was 1,013 cases per 100,000 population.

As of Wednesday, there were 130,894 active cases in Austria, 7,651 more than the day before. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 5,210,285 confirmed infections have been recorded. 5,058,597 people recovered and 6,580 were found to be healthy again in the last 24 hours. Two deaths were reported the day before, according to Thursday’s AGES update.

As of Thursday morning, 2,116 people were in the hospital, 131 more than reported the day before. 100 people were treated in intensive care units. That number has increased by 20 from the previous day and increased by 33 patients within a week.

Tyrol No. 1 of the inglorious ranking

Faced with the growing number of Covid infections, Edgar Wutscher, vice president of the Austrian Medical Association and president of the Federal Curia of resident physicians, appealed to exhaust all possibilities in the fight against the pandemic. “The pandemic is not over yet, even if we all wanted to. We all have to act now so that the situation doesn’t get out of control.” Wutscher therefore advises to wear the mask again.

On Wednesday, 20,527 vaccinations were carried out, of which 18,767 were booster (4th, 5th and all additional vaccination doses). 5,278,972 people and therefore 58.5 percent of Austrians are validly vaccinated as per the recommendation of the National Vaccination Committee (NIG).

The federal state with the highest seven-day incidence is currently Tyrol with 1,196.9, followed by Upper Austria, Salzburg, and Carinthia (1,189.9, 1,148.5, and 1,072.5, respectively). Lower Austria (973.5), Styria (952.7), Burgenland (911.3), Vorarlberg (878.5) and Vienna (864.9) follow.
