Jean-Luc Mélenchon reacted to the coronation of King Charles III this Saturday, May 6th. He criticized the ceremony and the “dripping syrups of the monarchy”. His criticism was echoed by Alexis Corbière, a rebellious MP.
While heads of state around the world paid tribute to the British people following the coronation of King Charles III. congratulated, Jean-Luc Mélenchon was much more critical of the ceremony.
“While the disgusting syrups of the monarchy are dripping on television […] so many people live in misery,” said the leader of France Insoumise, speaking at a demonstration in Marseille.
He went on to explain that “before a people so humiliated by neoliberal politics, there is something disgusting about this cinema with this man covered in disguises, jewels and precious stones”.
This ceremony “reminds us why we are so deeply Republicans,” he continued, quoting Saint-Just and Robespierre: “Kings are monsters who accept such display in the face of so much suffering”.
Alexis Corbière, a rebellious MP, also criticized the ceremony, denouncing “the media that was made aware of Charles III’s coronation ceremony. “saturated” and “stuffed with stupid pro-monarchist comments”.
