Coronation Streets Rob Mallard reveals his hand tremors are worse

Coronation Street’s Rob Mallard reveals his hand tremors are “worse” since fans spotted his “tremors”.

Coronation Street’s Rob Mallard has revealed his hand tremors have gotten “worse” since fans spotted it in an interview four years ago.

The 30-year-old Manchester actor – who has played the role of Daniel Osbourne on the ITV hit soap since 2016 – has been open about his slight tremors, which he first noticed when he was 14.

Ever since fans spotted it during an interview on This Morning in 2018, noting that he seemed “nervous” and “jittery”, Rob has said the neurological disorder has continued to worsen.

Significant tremors cause involuntary and “rhythmic tremors” – and Rob explained that he “didn’t know” it would only get worse with age.

His condition is in the same family as Parkinson’s and motor neuron disease.

Doctors insisted there was “nothing they could do” after he was diagnosed in his mid-twenties. He contacted the National Tremor Foundation, who guided him with advice.

Speaking of working on Corrie’s cobblestone streets, the 30-year-old actor has said he just needs to keep practicing to make it second nature – so his tremors are less obvious.

Speaking to The Express, Rob explained: “I really get through it with humor because if you don’t it can get frustrating.

“It’s very self-absorbed, so I’ll just take it from a humorous perspective.

“Everyone at work is aware of that. When something comes up or I need to do something, I usually just practice and practice and practice. But if I’m shaking and it’s very obvious, I’ll just stop and say, “Can I walk?”.

In an interview with Holly Willoughby and Philip Schofield on This Morning in January 2018, Rob appeared incredibly nervous while appearing on the live broadcast, notably shaking as he chatted to the show’s hosts.

The 25-year-old soap star seemed a little nervous and spoke about his honor at being nominated for the prestigious award, seemingly inadvertently skipping a plot detail in the process.

But fans watching from home noticed Rob was a little nervous and took to Twitter to comment.

“Is it me or is this guy shaking?” one asked, while another wrote: “I’m way too distracted by his shaking hair.”

One concerned tweeter wrote: “God is he alright? He looks very nervous.’

Another person joked that he had been drinking the energy drinks that Holly and Phil featured on the show earlier that morning.

“Think Rob hit the This Morning demo stock of energy drinks,” came one person’s comment, followed by another posting, “He’s been on the Red Bull.”

Two months later, the actor reappeared on the daytime show to reveal he was suffering from the progressive neurological condition.

Rob told presenters Phillip and Holly he was encouraged to speak out after fans noticed his shaking during an appearance on the ITV show in January, and admitted he sometimes had to use props while filming.

He told them in the interview: “As with most people, it first manifests in the hands, but then it can spread so that sometimes I get it in my neck and my head shakes.

“Then it’s a progressive disease and by the time I’m 50 it could well be in the larynx, the back of the spine, the legs, all the arms. It could be quite debilitating. I’ve had this for almost 10 years.’

Rob said he tried to hide the illness, but after fans noticed his tremors in a This Morning interview, he decided to speak out.

“My solution was to hide and manage myself because the job I’m in it could have a really detrimental effect on my ability to be cast,” he added.

“So it was something I tried to keep under wraps. But when it was shown live on TV, I was incredibly embarrassed and then angry, and then I got a lot of messages from people on Twitter saying, “Me too.”

“So I figured there was an unnecessary spotlight thrown at me here, and rather than walk away from it and let it pass me, let me redirect it.”

Speaking to the Express, he added that he was undergoing magnet resonance guided focused ultrasound treatment to target his tremors.

He said while he’s not at the stage where he’s “ready” for the NHS’ seamless procedure, he would “definitely” like to move on – because after treatment the tremors can still return.
