Montevideo Mayor Carolina Cosse explained why Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will be presented with the Greenest award during his visit to Uruguay this Tuesday. The President will be the first to receive this recognition.

“He’s a president who puts the environment at the heart of his strategy with a tremendous vision for the future,” Cosse said. The department head also invited everyone to come to the mayor’s office esplanade to witness the presentation of the award to Lula.

This award was created by the community to recognize relevant individuals who make a significant contribution to the environment and whose concern is paramount. The aim of the Commune is to reward the sectoral and transversal public policies proposed by the Brazilian President, integrating all civil society and productive sectors.

“During the first two terms of Lula da Silva’s administration, deforestation in the Amazon was reduced to 80%, and as he expressed in the inaugural address of his third presidency, in this new administration he makes a commitment to eradicate it completely,” stated the Municipality of Montevideo (IM) in a statement.

During his 2022 election campaign, the President also pointed out that only Brazil has what it takes to position itself as an environmental powerhouse, launching the energy and green transition, with the aim of achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions and zero deforestation of the Amazon, words to the the IM recalled in his statement.

“These premises are linked to the environmental prioritization carried out by Montevideo, where efforts have been made to create the comprehensive public policy ‘Montevideo Más Verde’, which advocates cultural change through the responsible use of resources and the intelligent organization of services, the social inclusion of its residents, the creation of opportunities and the care for biodiversity,” the municipality noted.

Anger at opposition city councilors

The councilors of the National Party, Diego Rodríguez, Fabián Brevetti and Adriana Balcárcel, questioned this Tuesday, in an act convened by the broad front, the award that will be given to Lula and the salute that the head of state will give from the balcony of the Municipal Palace .

“Cosse is using IM again [Intendencia de Montevideo] as a grassroots committee,” Mayor Diego Rodríguez Salomón said through his Twitter account, where he announced that he would request information on the matter. “He’s not ashamed. Enough of the abuses and proselytizing,” added the departmental legislator of added to the 404 list.

Espacio 40’s Bravetti told Montevideo Portal that from his sector they also understand that a request for reports should be encouraged and indicated that they will even analyze a call to the department head. The mayor said he discussed the issue with Senator Sebastián Da Silva.

“The mayor has turned from a trip into a business trip to do politics in other countries, and she showed that with yesterday’s speech [lunes] in Argentina. In other words, the mayor goes on business trips, and instead of representing the city, she does partisan politics,” Bravetti said.

List 71 Mayor Adriana Balcárcel warned that Cosse “is not committed to fulfilling her role as mayor and is living in an election campaign”. “Now he’s doing an act on the Mayor’s Esplanade. Dedicate yourself to cleaning, lighting and repairing Montevideo, which still has a lot of work to do,” he said.
