ALISON BOSHOFF: Costume Designer Sandy Powell is being courted for Cruella sequel following BAFTA success

Movie icon Sandy Powell became the first-ever costume designer to be honored with a Bafta grant on Sunday, and I’m hearing rumors that a very prestigious new project is in the pipeline: creating the costumes for the Cruella sequel.

Three-time Oscar winner Powell is apparently being courted by Disney to take the job — and the film, again starring Emma Stone, will be set in the 1980s — which is very much Powell’s era.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Disney wanted her to take on the project, but for now, it’s all about — talking.

Recent projects have included making the costumes for Snow White, out next year; He also worked on Mary Poppins Returns and Disney’s live-action Cinderella in 2018, starring Lily James.

Powell will be among the luminaries presenting talks and masterclasses at The Power Of Film event in London next week (tickets available through Eventbrite).

Also in attendance are director Ken Loach and actor Matthew Modine.

It was directed by filmmaker and publisher Charles Finch.

Jenny Beavan designed the costumes for Cruella – an origin story for the villain from 101 Dalmatians – and received an Oscar for her amazing designs.

Although she was afraid to speak in public, Sandy noted that she felt “honoured” to receive a Bafta scholarship.

Speaking live on stage after being presented with the award by actress Cate Blanchett, she said: “Oh this is mind blowing!

“A few weeks ago I met Bill Nighy on Bond Street and we were discussing awards shows and I expressed my fear of speaking.

“He said, ‘The best ones start with a joke, end with something meaningful and have a short sentence in the middle.’ So thanks Bill Here goes That was the funny thing.

“It is truly an honor to be invited to join such an incredible group of filmmakers who have received this grant and an even greater honor to be the first costume designer.

“I am very grateful for the generosity and guidance I have received throughout my life.

“From the elementary school teacher who first encouraged me to paint, the mentorship and trust I received from Derek Jarman in my early years, and the many brilliant staff I have had the privilege of working with ever since.”

Sandy ended her speech by dedicating the award to those who work in the fashion industry while rhyming a poetic list.

She added: “So thank you BAFTA, I accept this scholarship on behalf of my community. The supervisors, assistants, coordinators and PAs.

“The tailors and cutters, the seamstresses and buyers, the weavers, the knitters, the printers and dyers.

“The leatherworkers, the shoemakers, milliners, jewelers, the on-call workers, dressers, locksmiths and crew. Actually everyone who makes this work possible.”

She has worked frequently with directors Martin Scorsese and Todd Haynes and won Oscars for her drafts of Shakespeare in Love, The Aviator and The Young Victoria.
