Côte-Nord: Serious collision leaves three injured

A motorist is fighting for his life while his two passengers were also injured after colliding with a truck in Baie-Trinité on the north coast on Thursday afternoon.

The accident occurred around 1:50 p.m. at kilometer 868 on Route 138. This is an area halfway between Port-Cartier and Baie-Comeau.

According to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), the man behind the wheel of the car suddenly fell asleep. He then found himself in the opposite direction, where the truck driver could no longer avoid the impact.

“Due to the force of the impact, rescue tongs were required to free the driver from the vehicle. He is suffering from life-threatening injuries,” explains Hugues Beaulieu, spokesman for the SQ.

The other two occupants of the vehicle suffered only minor injuries, while the driver of the truck escaped uninjured.

Route 138 was closed to traffic for most of the day Thursday. A police officer specializing in accident investigations went to the scene to analyze the circumstances of the tragedy, which at first glance would not have any criminal consequences.
