Countdown, cessation of election propaganda in Guatemala

Decree No. 1-2023 of the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) provides in Article 15 in subsection “e” for the publication of polls in the media in addition to the above cessation.

This Friday afternoon, no political party or candidate will be able to promote the image of the group or the candidates for various public offices.

For the next 36 hours and at dawn on Sunday June 25, no message may be sent requesting a specific vote in favor of any political force or candidate.

You also may not grant or offer any favors, gifts or other compensation that would imply patronage for electoral purposes.

The body in charge of the process tasked the Media Department and the General Inspectorate with monitoring compliance with the closure of the campaign.

Around 9.3 million Guatemalans will go to the polls in just two days to elect a new president, vice presidents, 160 members of Congress, 20 for the Central American Parliament and 340 mayors for the period 2024-2028.

Should either candidate not receive 50 percent plus one of the votes, the TSE will schedule a second ballot on Sunday, August 20, contested by the two couples with the majority of the votes on the first date.
