    The calm before the storm

If the situation appears to be calming down in several places tonight, Radio-Canada meteorologist Waldir Da Cruz recalls that it is in fact “a sham calm before the real storm that will hit tonight.”

The rain that is already falling in some areas of Ontario will soon arrive in Quebec. It could turn to freezing rain before turning to snow overnight.

15 to 20 cm of snow is expected to fall in the greater Montreal area on Friday. Drivers need to be extra careful in the mornings because the wind blows snow onto the roads.

In Quebec, the Laurentians, Lanaudière and North Shore sectors of Montreal were hardest hit by the late afternoon storm, according to Transports Quebec spokeswoman Sarah Bensadoun.

In particular, behind Mont-Tremblant and up to Mont-Laurier, the road is completely covered with snow and visibility on the roads is limited, she explained in an interview with RDI.

We will have to drive extremely carefully, at least for the next few hours.

She is also calling for caution on Friday morning to motorists across the province. We know it will spread to the rest of the province. We know there will be episodes of high winds and freezing rain.

    Flood risk in Nova Scotia

New regions are under attack from winter storm warnings in the Atlantean provinces. Especially in Newfoundland and Labrador, where tens of centimeters of snow are expected to fall in the west of the province between Friday evening and Sunday afternoon.

Environment Canada has issued rain warnings in Nova Scotia: Up to 40mm is expected in places between Thursday evening and Saturday. These heavy rains could even cause flooding. Because the ground is frozen, it cannot absorb the water, which can run off and accumulate in the lower areas.

    A difficult rush hour

In Greater Montreal and the Laurentians, traffic is slowing across the road network due to weather conditions.

The rapid accumulation of snow could make travel difficult in some places, we can read on Environment Canada’s website. There could be a significant impact on commuter traffic in urban areas.

Environment Canada has withdrawn its forecast of freezing rain for metropolitan Quebec, but “snow will intensify tonight or tonight and continue through late Friday.”

Almost all of southern Quebec will be affected by the storm

Almost all of southern Quebec is subject to winter storm warnings or watches. These are issued when multiple bad winter weather conditions are forecast at the same time, Environment Canada explains.

Snow has already started to fall in some areas, particularly in the greater Montreal area. Elsewhere, like Rimouski, precipitation should start in the evening.

Targeted by a special weather report, Estrie should receive more rain than snow, it is said.

The Îles-de-la-Madeleine are subject to a snow warning, not a winter storm.
