Covid-19: 72,399 new cases, up 25% in a week, there is an epidemic rebound

Three days before the lifting of many restrictions, such as wearing a mask indoors or suspending a vaccination pass, Covid-19 numbers don’t look good. Health Minister Olivier Véran announced this Friday a “rebound” in the coronavirus epidemic, noting a “20% increase”.

Indeed, pollution has been rising for several days and remains above the peaks of previous waves. New cases reach 72,399 (up from 74,818 on Thursday night). A week earlier there were 57,789, up 25%. The incidence, the number of cases per 1,000 inhabitants, currently exceeds 500 in most regions.

A recovery not (yet) seen in a hospital, according to Public Health France (SPF) data this Friday evening. However, we know from the experience of recent waves that a delay of at least two weeks is expected between the increase in the number of cases and the increase in the number of hospitalizations.

So the decline continues, but at a slower pace for hospitals. If yesterday 21,287 patients tested positive for coronavirus, then this Friday evening there were 21,024 (22,643 seven days ago). There were 1099 new entries, up from 1012 on Friday. A figure that has been fairly stable throughout the week.

On the side of intensive care services, where the most severe cases are admitted, there are 1875 patients (up from 2153 a week ago). Yesterday there were 1928. Here too, the number of incoming entries is no longer decreasing: 119 new entries in the last 24 hours compared to 104 entries a week ago. In its latest report, Public Health France lists 134 hospital deaths, up from 100 a day earlier and 162 a week ago.

On the side of vaccination, which allows you to avoid the most severe forms of coronavirus, the rhythm is almost zero. As of this Friday, released by the Ministry of Solidarity and Health, 54,248,309 people have received at least one injection (i.e. 80.5% of the total population), and 53,310,414 people now have a full vaccination schedule. This Friday, more than 21,000 people received a booster dose, with a total of 39,270,983 French people receiving this third injection.
