As many as 18% of PCR tests conducted last week turned out to be positive for COVID-19. This is the highest rate since the Omicron wave in winter 2022.

This back-to-school wave is impacting hospitals, where the number of patients testing positive is increasing rapidly. Last week there were 140 more, for a total of 1,135. However, the impact of the variant currently circulating appears to be more limited to the intensive care unit, where there are only 19 positive patients.

Nevertheless, the wave is not without consequences. Quebec is currently regretting an average of seven deaths per day. As has been the case since the start of the pandemic, deaths are concentrated among seniors, particularly those aged 80 and older.

Additionally, 88 CHSLDs and 55 hospital centers are currently in an “active outbreak.”
