Covid in China: Xi Jinping demands "to protect" Life

Three years after the first-ever coronavirus cases emerged in Wuhan, the country is facing an explosion of cases.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday called for measures to “effectively protect people’s lives” as his country faces an outbreak of Covid-19 infections, state TV reported.

This is the first public comment from the Beijing strongman since the sudden lifting of the strict anti-Covid measures in place since 2020 in early December. Three years after the first-ever cases of coronavirus emerged in Wuhan (centre), the country is facing an explosion of cases.

Many hospitals are overwhelmed, pharmacies are reporting shortages of fever medication, while many crematoria surveyed by AFP have reported unusually high influxes of bodies for cremation.

Six official deaths

“The prevention and control of Covid-19 in China faces a new situation and new tasks,” Xi Jinping told state broadcaster CCTV.
