South Africa could enter a fifth wave of COVID-19 infections sooner than expected after a sustained spike in cases over the past 14 days, Health Minister Joe Phaahla said on Friday.

“What remains stable (…) is hospital admissions, including intensive care units, it’s not a very dramatic change,” declared Joe Phaahla during an emergency conference.

“There was also an increase in deaths, which is not very dramatic from a low base,” he added.

At this point the minister said that Health authorities have not been informed of the existence of a new variantapart from changes in the dominant variant in circulation, omicron.

South Africa has the highest number of infections and deaths related to the COVID-19 in Africa with over 3.7 million confirmed cases and over 100,000 deaths during the pandemic.
