Cowboys and Michael Gallup reach new deal

FRISCO, Texas “After all, Michael Gallup won’t attack free will.

The Cowboys and Gallup have agreed terms for a new starting wide receiver contract that expired after the 2021 season. The deal is said to be for five years and worth $62.5 million.

This Gallup deal intersects with recent reports that the Cowboys are in early talks with the Browns about a deal that would send wide receiver Amari Cooper to Cleveland. Cooper’s base salary of $20 million for 2022 is guaranteed if he is in the roster by day five of the league’s new year (March 20).

Gallup, a third-round pick from Colorado State in 2018, has become a viable passer option for quarterback Dak Prescott as arguably the best outfield threat in a deep and talented group of receivers.

In four seasons, Gallup produced 193 catches for 2,902 yards and 15 touchdowns, including a 1,000-yard season in 2020.

The 2021 season has been full of injury issues. Gallup missed seven games with a calf injury. After returning in eight games, he tore his cruciate ligaments in his left knee during a dropped ball touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals on January 2.

Gallup underwent surgery in early February, and it’s clear the Cowboys are happy with his prospects for the 2022 season and beyond.

If Cooper and the Cowboys do go their separate ways, the updated receiver body will feature first-time Pro Bowler CeeDee Lamb and Gallup at the top of the depth table.

Cedric Wilson, the No. 4 standout wide receiver, is on his rookie contract expiring, although the Cowboys are looking to re-sign him.
