Cowboys manager talks about whether Lance could see first-team practice reps – NBC Sports Bay Area

Trey Lance watched the team that drafted him take a hit on his new team’s quarterback, Dak Prescott, in prime time at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday night. But after moving from his third-place finish with the 49ers to a new opportunity with the Cowboys, Lance’s spot on the Dallas depth chart also appears to be set in stone for the foreseeable future.

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones made this clear in a radio interview with 103.5 The Fan on Monday, less than 24 hours before San Francisco’s 42-10 win over Dallas on “Sunday Night Football,” meaning there is no There is a rush to get Lance more involved in the offense than he already is.

“No, these things will evolve over time,” Jones said when asked if Lance would take first-team reps to get to know the Cowboys offense better. “I know [Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy] And [offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer], we all have a plan for him. Right now, the most important thing for the Dallas Cowboys is winning football games. Of course we concentrate on that.

“When we brought Trey here, we definitely understood what the situation would be if our starting quarterback was established in Dak Prescott and we had a good, solid backup in Cooper.” [Rush], and knew he would get most, if not all, of his reps on the scout team. But the most important thing is to learn week after week in the meeting rooms, get our hands on it and embrace our offense.”

When the 49ers sent Lance to the Cowboys, it was clear that the third-year signal-caller would also be third on the depth chart in Dallas. But Prescott has been a polarizing figure in the Lone Star State for quite some time, with injuries and playoff failures offering much more hope of a chance for Lance than in the Bay, where Brock Purdy is completely out.

Prescott’s performance in Sunday’s game did little to quell his critics – he was ejected three times and posted a 51.6 passer rating and 58.3 completion percentage in the loss. Rush entered the game in the fourth quarter and completed both pass attempts for eight yards.

Lance’s path back to the starting role remains unclear, but for now the former No. 3 draft pick can only watch, learn and wait his turn as he leads the scout team.

“I think he’s doing a great job for us,” Jones said. “I think he’s definitely taking advantage of his new opportunity here. Obviously, when you get a guy who doesn’t have to go through the offseason or training camp, and you have an established quarterback in Dak Prescott and a solid backup in Cooper Rush, you’re not going to get a lot of opportunities except on the practice field, where You work with the scout team and then rack your brains in the meeting room and learn the offense.

“And that’s exactly what he did, so we feel good about Trey and what he’s doing with us. I know it will continue to grow.”
