For Eddy de Pretto, the line between abyss and happiness is thin. After he decided to release his third album, Crash heartIndependent, in order to allow himself greater freedom, the 30-year-old French artist comes to us with songs that he deliberately wanted to address directly and head-on. The newspaper I spoke to the person we would like to work with… Hubert Lenoir!
The album was released just two and a half years after its predecessor. In what state of mind was it created?
“It happened full of emotion and energy. I let myself be seduced a little more by the music, by the initial composition. I arrived much less with texts that were written directly in the studio. I was able to really get involved with the music. It was the melody that dictated the word. Then I looked for the text. I really changed my method.”

The album’s R’n’B sounds were established during a trip to Los Angeles. How did it go?
“I looked everywhere for creativity to write. I was asked to go to Los Angeles to meet people, producers and album makers. I already had a lot of songs with me. For each album I look for a slightly special color. There I met Sacha Rudy. We started talking about the album and it opened a lot of doors for me visually and sonically. That’s when it happened, the clicking sound.”
What should this third CD sound like?
“I wanted a pretty direct, pretty frontal album. I wanted something that could be taken on the face. Each time I spoke to the directors [Rudy et Marlon B]I told them that the music must make me want to get up from the couch. I really wanted an energy that would grab us.”

What are the songs about?
“It’s not just an album about love. It’s also about the search for happiness and the things I’m trying to change. For me it was a search to transform a negative mood into something positive […] The subtext of this album is that there are a lot of breakdowns, ups and downs. We go from a very fast song to a complete crash. I wanted to make people feel that everyday schizophrenia that comes from trying to find happiness every day.”
Several dates in Europe have been announced for a tour in 2024. Will we be able to see this new concert in Quebec?
“I hope so, I would like to do that. We are planning it. Of course I think it will be announced soon.”
The new album features the participation of Juliette Armanet. Would you like to collaborate with a Quebec artist one day?
“I’m happy! Hubert Lenoir, I love him. I saw him play in Quebec, at the FrancoFolies, in the main square. I loved it. It was a visual and scenic slap in the face. I think it was great chaos.”
