Crime and prostitution around the Las Vegas Grand Prix: a “nightmare,” says police chief

LAS VEGAS | There’s no escaping the entertainment capital of the world this week. Erotic clubs are already clearly visible on billboards and boxes on the street, and indecent offers are multiplying at a rapid pace.

And thousands of risqué ads abound on the Internet. It is possible to select your “F1 girl” to literally “exercise your joys” in a car racing scene. Some ads even use calligraphy similar to Formula 1.

Las Vegas is no different from the other stops of the big circus, which attracts a lot of visitors and a lot of money that is splashed everywhere. But in “Sin City,” the temptations seem greater.

Drivers Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton have already received advances for “free services” from two sex workers who work in a brothel near the city.

Increase expected

You should know that prostitution is illegal in Las Vegas. However, this is not the case throughout Nevada, as certain forms are permitted, particularly in cities with populations of 400,000 or less. Less than an hour from the illuminated metropolis, it is possible to receive sexual services in brothels and private clubs.

Las Vegas Police Chief Kevin McMahill has been asked about crime, prostitution and human trafficking since this summer and says he is concerned about the increase in sexual services and related crimes.

“To be honest, Formula 1 is a nightmare for me. I won’t lie. We have never organized such a major event. The threat is real and enormous,” he told local media in July, also fearing an increase in thefts and drug-related rape cases.

The Las Vegas Police Department (LVMPD) also established special anti-prostitution and human trafficking units during the week of the Grand Prix. Community organizations are also keeping an eye on things.

Since the beginning of 2023, LVMPD has listed 1,634 prostitution-related crimes. This time last year they were at 3,959.

During the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight in August 2017, LVMPD made 118 arrests for prostitution-related crimes in less than 48 hours.
