Record number of fires in Amazonia in February 2024
Nearly 3,000 wildfires were recorded in the Brazilian Amazon in February, a record for the month since records began in 1999, official sources said yesterday, Portugal's TVI reported.
According to satellite images from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), 2,940 fires were recorded in February, 67% more than the 1,761 in February 2007, the previous record.
Canada is now again requiring a visa for Mexicans who want to enter the country
The government of Justin Trudeau reported that starting today, “electronic authorization (ETA) applications must be accompanied by the existence of a current U.S. visa or a Canadian visa within the last 10 years.” AMLO had tried to negotiate the reintroduction of visas for Mexicans by sending two high-level missions to Canada. However, the latter reported that the introduction of these new requirements was in response to the increase in asylum applications submitted by Mexican citizens that were rejected, withdrawn or abandoned. “Today’s action will ease pressure on Canada’s borders, immigration system, housing and social services while preserving the mobility of Mexican citizens seeking to come to Canada,” Ottawa said.
According to the United Nations, the “widespread persecution in Nicaragua” is a crime against humanity
Today's report from the United Nations Group of Experts denounces widespread persecution and crimes against humanity by the government of Managua, which has extended repression to the entire population perceived to be in opposition or “not loyal enough” to the Sandinista regime. “President Daniel Ortegathe vice president Rosario Murillo and identified high-ranking public officials must be subject to judicial investigation for their possible responsibility for the crimes, violations and abuses described and discussed in this report. “Nicaragua must also answer for its possible state responsibilities,” the UN report concludes.
