Prosecutors overseeing the New Mexico case have dropped manslaughter charges against actor and film producer Alec Baldwin for filming on the set of the film Rust in October 2021, during which his cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed, according to the filmmaker’s attorneys reported Thursday.

The decision comes just two weeks before the trial begins, and following the departure in March of the case’s former prosecutor, Andrea Reeb, who had been denied by the actor’s lawyers also to be MPs in the state legislature. She was replaced by two special prosecutors, Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis, who have now decided to drop the charges against Baldwin.

Hutchins, 42, was fatally shot and director Joel Souza, 48, was injured in the Oct. 21, 2021 incident in New Mexico when a projectile was fired from a gun held by Baldwin, who earns his living as an actor and producer made of the film.

The actor reached an agreement with Hutchins’ family in October, leaving his widower, Matthew Hutchins executive producer of the film, shooting of which resumed this month.

The judge responsible for the civil suit the widower brought against the actor and the film’s producers in 2022 ruled Monday that the details of the agreement are confidential to protect the right to privacy of Hutchins’ 10-year-old son.
