The population of the city of Zaragoza, Colombia, took over Bolívar street this Wednesday (15) after rumors spread that the place would be full of gold. City Hall undertook redevelopment work when an improvised mine was built on the site.
Countless people from different regions stormed the construction site with pickaxes and shovels to remove the precious metal.
A video shows groups divided into tasks such as breaking up the ground with the equipment they took away, removing the remains of stone and asphalt from the site, and digging up the mud that lies beneath the road. The road turned into an improvised mine
According to the newspaper El Colombiano, the police were called, but the agents were unable to resolve the situation and just waited for the miners to leave the site so work could resume.
There is no information about the nuggets found, but the authorities have no forecast for the reopening of shops on the street, which have been closed since Monday (13).
El Colombiano points out that the Antiquia region has been known to have been devastated by illegal mining, which has destroyed around 400,000 hectares of native forests and springs. Currently the site is a graveyard of dry trees and rivers completely polluted by mercury, in addition to the excessive migration of animals from the area.
