Crusoe: Hezbollah fires rocket from mosque in Lebanon and hits Israel The antagonist

Hezbollah fired rockets from a mosque in southern Lebanon this Tuesday, December 26, hitting Israel in an attack.

The projectiles hit the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Mary of Iqrit in an Arab village on Israeli territory.

Footage of the Hezbollah attack was released by the Israel Defense Forces on X, a social network formerly known as Twitter.

“Hezbollah fired on Israeli civilians from a mosque in southern Lebanon,” Israeli authorities said in the post.

“This is not Hezbollah’s first attack on a holy site today. Places of worship must be sacred and not sacrificed to terrorism,” he added.

According to Israeli authorities, nine soldiers and one civilian were injured in the attack.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the attack.

In an official statement, the Israeli government said that “this attack represents not only a blatant violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, but also an attack on religious freedom.”

Resolution 1701, passed in 2006, states that Hezbollah cannot mobilize south of the Litani River, the last geographical barrier before Lebanon's border with Israel.

According to the resolution, implemented at the height of the war between Hezbollah and Israel, only the Lebanese army and the UN Interim Force can mobilize in this strip of Lebanon's far south.

What about the UN ceasefire?

The United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution on Friday, December 22, to increase the delivery of humanitarian assistance to Gaza. However, the proposal drawn up by the United Arab Emirates does not envisage an immediate end to the fighting between Israel and Hamas.

Of the 15 council members, 13 voted for and none against. Only the USA and Russia abstained from voting.

The resolution calls for “urgent measures to immediately enable safe and unhindered access to humanitarian assistance, including to create the conditions for a permanent ceasefire.”
