The CEO of e-commerce giant Amazon is bullish on crypto and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). He says that crypto is “getting bigger” over time and NFTs will continue to “grow very strongly.”
CEO at Amazon accepting crypto payments and selling NFTs
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy spoke about cryptocurrency and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in an interview with CNBC on Thursday. Jassy succeeded Jeff Bezos as President and CEO of Amazon in July last year. Previously, he led Amazon Web Services (AWS) since its inception in 2003.
Regarding whether Amazon will accept cryptocurrencies for payments for products on its platform, the CEO confirmed, “We’re probably not close to including crypto as a payment mechanism in our retail business.” However, he noted:
I believe that over time you will see crypto grow bigger.
Commenting on whether he owns any cryptocurrency, the Amazon exec revealed, “I don’t have any bitcoin myself.”
When asked if Amazon might sell NFTs one day, Jassy replied, “I think it’s possible later on the platform.” While revealing that he personally doesn’t own NFTs, the Amazon CEO opined:
I assume that NFTs will continue to grow very strongly.
The e-commerce giant has hired crypto experts for various areas of its business. In November of last year, AWS posted a vacancy for a principal digital asset specialist who “can help drive adoption in the global digital asset community.”
Amazon also posted a job offer for a digital currency and blockchain expert to join its payment acceptance and customer experience team in June last year, with the goal of developing the company’s digital currency and blockchain strategy and product roadmap.
