Cuba Attends International Forum on Migration Amid Mass Exodus

The Cuban government is attending the United Nations-organized First International Migration Review Forum, which will be held in New York through next Friday amid a massive exodus of its citizens.

“Cuba will reaffirm its firm commitment to the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration,” reiterated the official newspaper announcing the meeting.

The First International Migration Review Forum, based in the United States, will develop a work program that will conclude with a declaration of progress to be agreed by the participating countries.

“The forum is a moment of great importance for the international community to reflect on the achievements made so far in the implementation of the Global Compact on Migration (GCM) and the commitment made in Morocco almost four years ago to ensure the rights of migrants are respected” , said António Vitorino, Director General of the International Organization for Migration, at the opening of the forum.

Adopted in 2018, the Global Compact on Migration has 23 goals to better manage migration at the local, national, regional and global levels, and among its goals is to mitigate the adverse and structural factors that prevent people from moving to sustainable Build livelihoods and maintain their countries of origin.

This international event takes place in the midst of an important event Migration wave in Central America that registered more than 35,000 Cubans crossing the border between Mexico and the United States in Aprila figure that exceeds the official data of previous months and which puts the authorities of the countries of the region in a complex situation, which has to face the influx of people, many of whom are undocumented.

Cubans, victims of political oppression and impoverishment, are fleeing the island, mostly via Nicaragua, trying to reach the southern border of the United States to seek international protection.

This weekend, more than 300 Cubans were arrested by Border Control Patrol agents (CBP), in the Eagle Pass area, near the Rio Grande.

Several groups of people were seen in the same placeincluding citizens of the island who entered US territory and entered private farms in Texas.
