Cuba takes part in World Poetry Day

International Poetry Day

Havana, March 21 (Prensa Latina) Today, World Poetry Day becomes a cause for celebration and entertainment for its cultists, who are leading a wide program of actions in Cuba to promote this literary expression.

While creators from different walks of life encourage the development of this manifestation, the island’s culture minister, Alpidio Alonso, recalled the value of the verses as “the supreme expression of spirituality and human creation.”

Via the Twitter social network, the head of the sector and writer “congratulated the Cuban poets in particular. In Cuba, poetry shaped the nation. Poetry also made and makes the homeland,” he said.

During the day, the Caribbean nation becomes the stage for poets with actions promoted by this capital’s Casa de la Poesía, including a poetic tour of the streets and towns of Havana, as well as poetry readings and declamations.

Andrés Perez Viciedo, Lisette Núñez González, Victor Joel Ariosa and Sinecio Verdecia Díaz will take part in the meeting, while various cultural institutions will provide spaces for dialogue on the subject.

The international day, celebrated every March 21, was established in 1999 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in recognition of the power of poetry as a social tool to raise awareness of social issues.

Well, “as a form of intimate expression that allows one to open oneself up to others, poetry enriches the dialogue that catalyzes all human progress and is more necessary than ever in turbulent times,” said UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay.

Likewise, the appointment represents an opportunity to promote linguistic diversity, promote the visibility of endangered languages and remember those who have made verse their ultimate weapon, such as Cuba’s national poet Nicolás Guillén.
