Havana, March 10 (EFE).- Cuba has received a total of 2,724 irregular migrants from different countries in the region so far this year, including a group of 26 migrants extradited this Friday by the United States Coast Guard states, reported the Ministry of Cuba Interior (Minint).
The latest migrants deported by US authorities – 23 men and three women – add up to the total of 1,944 raftsmen killed in about 20 US Coast Guard operations, which intercepted them at sea after their illegal departure from the island. were deported to the island.
In recent weeks, other groups of irregular migrants have been returned to Cuba by the governments of Mexico, the Bahamas and the United States (41).
The Government of Cuba reiterates that it maintains its commitment “with regular, safe and orderly migration” and insists on “the dangers and risky conditions for life that illegal exits from the country by sea pose.”
In the case of the United States, US Coast Guard crews have intercepted more than 5,740 Cubans since October 1 of last year – which marks the beginning of the current fiscal year – a high number compared to previous years.
The Washington government introduced a policy in early 2023 to take in 30,000 migrants a month from Venezuela, Haiti, Cuba and Nicaragua.
In parallel, it will immediately expel to Mexico undocumented migrants from those countries attempting to illegally cross the southern border into its territory.
