HAVANA.- Cuba’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, today welcomed the new Brazilian government’s decision to fully rejoin Cuba Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), after the country’s separation from this regional body under the mandate of previous President Jair Bolsonaro.
Via Twitter, the Cuban Foreign Minister pointed out that Latin America and the Caribbean can and must further consolidate their unity in diversity as an essential prerequisite for the necessary integration.
In a statement this Thursday, the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs underlined that his return to Celac is an essential step towards rebuilding the nation’s diplomatic heritage and its full reintegration into the international community.
The note also stressed that this integration mechanism, made up of the 33 countries in the region, is privileged to promote political dialogue, unity and cooperation.
On January 1, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took office as President of Brazil, which defeated far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro (who opted for reelection in the position) in October 2022 in the second ballot with 50.90 percent of the valid votes.
During his visit to the South American giant to attend the inauguration of the President, Cuba’s Vice President Salvador Valdés Mesa stated that the assumption of power by Lula da Silva will strengthen regional integration given the country’s political weight.
