Havana, 30 March (EFE).- The Cuban government on Thursday expressed a wish for a speedy recovery to Pope Francis, who remains hospitalized at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome because of a respiratory infection.
“We have learned that Pope Francis has been hospitalized with a respiratory infection. From Cuba we wish His Holiness a speedy and full recovery,” President Miguel Díaz-Canel wrote on Twitter.
Along with his message, the Cuban President published a picture of the Pope in front of the altar of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Charity in Santiago de Cuba during his pastoral visit to the island in September 2015.
The Pope’s health is “gradually improving,” a Vatican spokesman said.
Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez also wished the 86-year-old pope a “full” recovery, who has been hospitalized since Wednesday for breathing difficulties.
Francisco’s recovery will require a few days of appropriate hospital treatment, although his health is not a cause for concern. The controls ruled out serious problems, said Vatican press office director Matteo Bruni.
The Holy See has not yet confirmed or specified Holy Week plans, but has reported that the planned treatment of the Bishop of Rome is improving and continuing.
Italian media have announced that the Pope will not officiate some of the Holy Week rites and will be replaced by cardinals.
He is expected to remain in hospital for a few more days, but it is possible that doctors will recommend complete rest at his Casa Santa Marta residence once he is released. EFE
