Cuban embassy in Washington targeted by Molotov cocktails

The Cuban embassy in Washington was the target of two Molotov cocktail shots on Sunday evening, the head of Cuba’s diplomacy said, describing the incident as a “terrorist attack.”

“The Cuban Embassy in the United States was the target of a terrorist attack carried out by a person who threw two Molotov cocktails,” said Bruno Rodríguez in a message published on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

“No harm was caused to the (embassy) staff,” he added.

This is the second attack on the Cuban mission in Washington in recent years. A man opened fire on the building in April 2020 without causing injuries.

The attack on Sunday evening in Washington occurred a few hours after the return to Havana of Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, who had been in New York, where he notably attended the United Nations General Assembly.

In New York, Cubans living in the United States demonstrated against the Cuban president’s presence at the United Nations, according to posts and videos shared on social networks.

“Anti-Cuba groups resort to terrorism when they believe they can benefit from impunity, which Cuba has repeatedly warned U.S. authorities against,” Rodriguez added after Sunday’s attack.

In April 2020, the Cuban foreign minister summoned the American charge d’affaires in Havana, Mara Tekach, to express his “strong protest” following the “terrorist attack” against his embassy.

That shooting left bullet holes in the exterior walls and damaged several windows and trim on the building’s facade, AFP noted.
