Havana, 24 March (EFE).- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel announced his participation in the XXVIII. Ibero-American Summit to be held this Friday and Saturday in the neighboring Dominican Republic.
“We go to the 2023 Summit with the joy of visiting the sister country of the Generalissimo (Máximo Gómez) and of being part of the collaborative effort of Ibero-America. We’ll be back before Sunday,” he wrote on Twitter.
The summit concludes on the eve of parliamentary elections the island is holding this Sunday, March 26, where the country’s highest legislative body, the National Assembly of People’s Power (ANPP), will be renewed with 470 MPs.
The meeting in the Dominican Republic is themed “Together for a fair and sustainable Ibero-America” and, according to the organizers, has topics such as food security, the environment, digital rights and a new financial architecture on the agenda.
This Friday saw the foreign ministers segment of the summit, where Cuba advocated “more and better inclusive cooperation.”
“More and better cooperation between our countries is needed,” said Cuban Foreign Ministry Director General for Multilateral Affairs and International Law Rodolfo Benítez.
Benítez stressed that Cuba has been working to achieve this goal since its presidency of the Group of 77 plus China.
He also criticized the international economic order and assured that “developing countries are bearing the worst consequences” of the current crisis.
At least 14 heads of state or government from the 22 participating countries are expected to attend, including Colombian Presidents Gustavo Petro; Chilean Gabriel Boric, Uruguayan Luis Lacalle and Argentinian Alberto Fernández.
Among the confirmed absences, that of the Brazilian Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stands out for an official trip to China; the Mexican Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who is not used to going to these appointments, and the Salvadoran Nayib Bukele.
It will be the first face-to-face summit since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, as the one in Andorra had a mixed format for that reason. EFE
