Located in the north of Scotland, the Orkney Islands are looking to other forms of government to strengthen their Nordic connection. The archipelago, currently part of the United Kingdom, is looking at ways to connect with Norway to find governance that better suits its culture and geography.
As the Orkney Islands are historically and culturally closely linked to Scandinavia, they were under the control of Norway and Denmark until 1472, when they were made available to Scotland. Now the Orkney Council, led by James Stockan, is submitting a motion to the Archipelago Council to consider possible “alternative governance”.
One of the options explored is to follow the example of the Faroe Islands, which have successfully become an independent territory from Denmark. Another possibility would be to become a dependency of the British Crown, like the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

With their rich history and unparalleled natural beauty, the Orkney Islands have the potential to stand out even more. Strengthening the Nordic connection is a chance to recognize and support the archipelago.
