In light of the Russian war against Ukraine, CDU politicians want to openly address Russia’s policy under then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel and any errors in judgment. Schleswig-Holstein Prime Minister Daniel Günther told The Pioneer: “With the knowledge available today, there is hardly anyone who denies that mistakes were made and that he was very gullible.”
The deputy head of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Johann Wadephul, says he expects more explanations from Merkel. CDU Secretary General Mario Czaja, on the other hand, said that Merkel is in political retirement, that she has taken a clear stand against the Russian war and has spoken out in favor of measures against it. “By doing so, she also made clear what she stands for. That’s enough.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asked Merkel to travel to Bucha, where hundreds of bodies were found after the withdrawal of Russian troops.
