It all reportedly happened last Thursday (28) when people staying on the Cornish coast witnessed the unusual scene.
But calm down, it’s not a trick of local magicians. Everything is nothing more than a rare optical illusion called “Fata Morgana” (name comes from a witch related in the story of King Arthur).
Also known as the upper mirage, the illusion is created when warm air meets cold water, creating a thermal inversion zone.

In calm weather, the regular separation between warm and cold air near the Earth’s surface can act as a refractive lens, creating an inverted image over which the distant image appears to float, letting you see “ghost ships”.
Last year, images of a boat ‘floating’ in Scotland went viral, leaving many wondering what they are really seeing.
