It is well known that the Czech Republic wants to expand its nuclear power plants. Two new reactor blocks are planned at Temelin and several smaller plants. But the plans for these mini nuclear plants are likely to be much more advanced than previously known. According to German media reports, seven specific projects are already being examined. The first one in Temelin could be operational in 2032.
“Once again not informed”
Things are boiling in the communities of Mühlviertel, on the border with the Czech Republic. The mayor of Leopoldschlag, Anita Gstöttenmayr, complains that once again we were not informed, despite being so close to Temelin: “Temelin is only 50 kilometers from the center of our city. And from some high points of the municipality you can see the reactors to the naked eye. Something is simply being considered or decided without us being informed.”
“The disposal question has not yet been answered”
In addition, many other questions are still unanswered, according to Rainbach Mayor Günther Lorenz: “How do you deal with radioactive waste, with final storage? We also fear that this will be dumped again near the Austrian border.”
Demos and border blocks are a topic again
Demonstrations and border blockades, for example in Wullowitz, are now a problem again, says Gstöttenmayr: “It sounds stupid, but we will have to go out into the streets again to point things out and get something. It’s sad in times like this that you can’t find another way to communicate, but then you have to – as the saying goes – make a riot.”
