German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) openly reprimanded CDU leader Friedrich Merz for his statements on healthcare for asylum seekers. “What Mr. Merz presented does not correspond to the legal situation in Germany. I think you should be more careful with your words,” said the Chancellor in an interview with SWR published today.
As for the rejected but tolerated refugees, Merz said they got their dentures in Germany and were taking away dentist appointments from Germans. The Chancellor said he advocates consistent deportations of people who are not entitled to protection in Germany. “But this need not tempt you to be clumsy with your words,” he emphasized towards the CDU leader.
Criticism from many sides
Merz was accused of harboring resentment with his statements. Harsh criticism came not only from NGOs, the SPD, the Greens and the Left, but also from the German Dental Association. “The current political confusion does not solve any problems. I would be happy to see more practical work in politics”, said its president, Christoph Benz.
Scholz also appeared open to the FDP’s demand to give asylum seekers vouchers instead of cash. He is also open to demands to allow more asylum seekers in Germany to work.
